I am curious how recognizable is the sovereign? The British empire is long gone but I still feel that if I wound up in some strange port halfway around the world with a pocket full of gold sovereigns I would be able to negotiate a deal for what I needed.

You don't need a reserve currency when you have gold. At the end of the year a country just settles its trade imbalance with another country in gold bullion. When everyone is living within their means that is without the benefit of the printer it won't be an unmanageable amount.
