That depends. Maybe maybe not. Going straight S&P instead of individual stocks is difficult to beat long term. With individual company stocks you also have to monitor things like quarterly earnings reports, good or bad news specific to the company. Earnings reports can be high volatility and you can get a nice pump (earnings exceeded expectations), an unfortunate sell off (earnings missed expectations), or neutral. Or sometimes earnings is good but the thing sells off anyway. Or earnings is bad but it still pumps because fuck it. Stuff like that gets smoothed over when you only have an index fund rather than individual companies.
