Look at that disgusting tatami and cracked tile. Maybe this place would be salvageable but I doubt it's worth the effort when you can get something just as large that's not a mess for roughly the same amount of money. So you just have to avoid things like that unless they're way cheaper than the equivalent (usually not the case).

You're going to have a bad time unless you learn the language. Japanese isn't difficult though (also took speech lessons due to an ear infection). The grammar is easy and the pronunciation is consistent enough.
