You're assuming the stock is increasing in value, not staying the same, or dropping

Again it's not an exact equation, and most big specs know about it

But it's what screws you if you want to buy the day before a record date, then sell as soon as the dive is assigned to you

Buying dividend stocks to short near the divdate is never a good idea
