Say that you desire to learn and go down the automation path. In my college classes we used Labview (made by national instruments) but emerson, rockwell, siemens are all fair game too. Just learn the basics to show them you're serious and willing to learn. Your main leverage is that you're not some entitled 50 year old. This is how i did it
