The main problem with renewable is fluctuation, unless you solve the problem of having to buffer a year+ supply of energy .. hydrogen being one of the few options that might somewhat work.
Germany is around 40% renewable, and the power grid at its limits, the graph shows eco-production and energy use.
The fluctuation has to be compensated using power-plants on stand-by to use when renewable production doesn't happen.
If you want a lot of renewables the result is having to pay for these, a stronger power-grid able to deal with the fluctuation, and ... conventional power-plants that are able to provide all necessary energy when there's no renewable production.
