GME had an expansive response due to the sheer amount of people in on the strategy at the same time. This created enough volume to combat all of the short attacks and dumps shorts and hedge funds were and are using to drop prices (GME, BBBY, etc.).
Too many stocks at play will dilute the volume, since everyone is split across different stocks. So when the shorts dump and trigger stops / panic, there will not be enough buy side volume to win the game, which in turn drives the price down.
