Even with higher rent and taxes I would still come out ahead just taking transit.

And where I live (chicago) transit isn't really seen as an option only for the poor; everyone takes it. Home prices are very clearly and visibly tied to proximity to an L stop, for example (speaking only on neighborhoods where you, as a white person, would want to live). Pretty incredible and bizarre to me this isn't the norm across the rest of the country.
