It is not logical to want to go to mars right now. If you really get into the logistics of what it will take to live there and what life is going to be like there for the first settlers it's pretty grim. It would be a lot more logical to go to the moon and set up a base there for yearlong habitation and see what the benefits are before going to mars which is also a barren wasteland.

he want's to go because people look up to him for talking about it and it's an interesting subject. For someone his age who grew up with the moon landing being heralded as the greatest singular human achievement in history going to mars would make him a super big man. It's really just unbridled nonsense vaporware sales to talk about settling mars right now as a private company that needs to make a profit. Huge nation states such as Russia and the USA have looked at it and are not really gunning for human settlement that hard because they know the horrible logistics
