Ok, but does that make the life worth living? Society would have gone on without the life time supply of her labour, 100,000 blind tracks or whatever it is, and in terms of her personal life, is it worth it? She could still have a social life and have savings or a more dignified job or work a 20 hour week.

Too often people rationalise things they do in life through some overt moralistic stance. You suggest maybe doing a short course or starting a business, and instead of thinking "hey, I could make more money in less time and improve my life," they spout: "I'm contributing to society" or "I have a family to support" or if they are a /biz/ or /pol/ fag "At least i'm not a NEET" or "Your father and your fathers father were fine doing a 40 hour week, why aren't you".

Chekhov recognised that the great boon of his generation was that they were not born serfs, but nowadays it seems like people will fight for that serfdom to the bitter end.
