the good: decent starting pay but lower than other engineering fields, 100% recession proof, market is always hungry for more civils, many companies you work for will offer stock ownership programs, day to day work is more time consuming than it is difficult, if all else goes to shit you can work in construction as a project manager and still make good money (quite a few go this route), some of the work is even relaxing (pic related is what im doing from home today)
the bad: very hard to make 6 figs with the degree, your job is hell bent on whether or not you are a PE (professional engineer) which you have to take some hard exams to become, if you choose to work for the city then you will be back-stabbed A LOT, you need to be paranoid about checking your work because if you dont then you will collapse a bridge or flood a neighborhood
