hi anon OP here. Nikon D3500, just a regular 24megapixel apsc sensor. I bought it as a camera body alone for cheap, so I don't have a trick autofocus lens. I have a stock of vintage prime lenses though, manual focus only. For close-ups I use a 35-200mm f/3.5 Nikon macro lens, for general shooting a 28mm f/2.8 Nikkor. Natural sunlight and like other anon said, a $5 LED lamp that otherwise illuminates my room helps tremendously.

personally I prefer coins because they are beautiful and have a face value and historical value. especially the .900 purity stuff as it can actually be handled without too much concern. they stack nicely and can be flipped or put in tubes. or coin holders to keep them secure and close to you. bars typically will stay in an ugly blister pack and are too soft to play with.

Gold. Spend maybe $1-2k on silver if you want, but only as a supplement.

Do not buy gold bars. Get coins. Personally I like old European coins. Krugerrands would work too. .900 purity is nice because its not so soft it might get damaged just by handling.
