Volatility cycles in 2021 were consistent because settlement windows were outside deferral dates (holidays). Cycles this past year were unreliable because because settlement often fell on deferral windows. 2020 was very similar to 2022, and the accumulation of deferred settlement from Nov-20 into Jan-21 compounded with fuckhuge options positions opened as sharks smelled blood and large insider buy-ins directly caused the Jan-21 run. This time around the double deferral is identical, but instead of options positions which can go away as quickly as they're opened, killing momentum, we instead have unprecedented liquidity.
