First of all, I'm a fourth year US MD student about to graduate in a few months, so I know a bit about medicine. Three weeks ago, my wife and I went on our first cruise from Palm Beach, FL to the Bahamas. The day my dad dropped us off at the airport to fly to Florida, I developed chills, malaise, shortness of breath, body aches, and a terrible cough. I get sick about once per year, but this was the worst respiratory illness I could recall since I had acute bronchitis once as a child. I coughed so much I puked on the second day. My wife thought I was being a big baby complaining about my symptoms...until she started exhibiting the same symptoms the next day. I even had to take ephedrine plus use my wife's albuterol inhaler. As it turned out, both of my parents and my 80-year-old grandma who lives with them got sick too. Originally thinking it was influenza (due to the body aches and neck stiffness), my wife and I called our PCP to get an empiric prescription of Tamiflu for both of us, and we gradually recovered over the course of a week. My parents and grandma recovered with no meds. None of us got any testing at any point. When we got back home, we found out that there had been several confirmed cases in our community around the time we got sick. In hindsight, I feel like we may have all had COVID-19 and recovered from it. I mean, what are the fucking chances that my entire family caught a very contagious respiratory illness right around the time a global pandemic is spreading with the exact same symptomatology?
