Because some countries tax dividends less than stock gains. And it makes boomers feel happy so bringing your seven figure father to invest his money into a dividend ETF instead of some bank scam fund is better than nothing.
Then some people feel happy investing in "safe" companies they know.

I'm not saying it is a good strategy unless you are loaded and have some weird and complicated diversification or tax scheme going, but there are reasons why people invest in that stuff and being happy about your decisions is more important than being right about them.

Obviously for us younger people these reasons are not convincing.
