Memes and conspiracy theories aside, how the fuck did he make all his money?

I've only done on-and-off research on him since the suicide (and I'm soon about to be too drunk to do any further for the rest of the weekend). But one thing I've gathered is that he was a pretty low-key, but effective sociopath -- even when you take his sexually abusive tendencies out of the equation. He was quite good at manipulating and charming people into his favour, while also gaining leverage over them.
