Gold is great in small quantities, as a small bargaining chip. Not great for moving wealth around. BTC has plenty of counterparties willing to accept your coin and then you can buy other nice assets like real estate once you leave the evolving hellscape, AND you can transport it entirely in your head or on a piece of paper if you are good at obfuscation.

Crypto is not a reinventing of the wheel, in your metaphor it is the invention of the airplane.

Oh, I forgot to mention that BTC's monetary value matters a lot to its "use case" as "digital gold" or a "store of value". Conversely, the monetary value of Monero doesn't matter that much to its users because Monero is a medium of exchange for goods and services (AKA a currency). Monero could be $100k each, or $100 each, and i honestly wouldn't care. The only thing that would change is the number of tokens I need to buy things. It's foolish to back BTC for the long term.
