It's a bit uncanny but I think this book from 1960 I bought for 56 cents earlier today is exactly what you're looking for, it's very digestible as each case study/topic is a just a few pages and from what I've read so far it's delightfully interesting, one of the best windows into the personal experiences of people slogging through the Great Depression I've come across.
