So why is NASA working with him and why is he receiving gubment subsidies? You think SpaceX can't just as easily implement the slow-down then lander thing if it's more feasible?
SpaceX 90%+ of the way there, case in point, they already made a delivery to the ISS and will be delivering US astronauts soon and they stopped relying on Russian Soyuz... they're offering private missions one japanese dude already signed up....
Blue Origin seems just like that Virgin low orbit flight thing... they've been working on it for decades and still can't get it completely right

Elon did it in 10 years. I know you're looking at financials and making your judgement but sometimes that's not everything....
