There are some who do need time and come back on their own, or when they're ready to grab an outstretched hand.

And our ancestors lived in times where social pressures were far different, and there weren't camera phones everywhere and people didn't post pictures of people eating in restaurants alone to ridicule them... there's no easy answer to this.
