>what should I look out for when buying old coins, pre-WWII?
You'll probably want 50 sen coins from the 20s and 30s. Just like Reichsmarks they're more numismatically valuable than valuable for the silver in them. They're 72% Silver and contain 0.114 ozt. ASW. Older than that you have Silver coins from the 19th and early 20th Century which are mostly 80% Silver ranging in denomination from 5 sen (which was only minted in silver until 1880) to 50 sen and a 90% Silver 1 Yen coin containing about as much Silver as a Silver Dollar. All of this is much more expensive with almost everything from this era commanding a high premium.
You also have 100 Yen coins from the 50s and 60s which are 60% Silver and can be bought much closer to spot.
