Don't let your visions of a better tomorrow cloud your money making abilities and opportunities today mate.

I will NOT eat bugs.
I will NOT live in a pod.
I will NOT use the cloud.

If urbit succeeds you will be able to steer your legacy social networks via social craft that run on api’s connected to your personal cloud computer. This will be done entirely in a p2p fashion and thereby starve these leviathans of the data that they feed off of. It’s hugely problematic for TPTB but Zucc already has billions so he might be able to pivot fb or just start up something else, or even start buying up digital real estate in some of these competing networks.

My understanding is that all tech does this in order to maximize revenue from ads. FB sort of got called out for it recently but it really is one of the biggest scams of the current paradigm. There are tons of de facto monopolies in tech that all overvalue their user base engagement levels and act like ads are God’s gift. The current monetary structure around selling ads also motivates them to build tech which addicts users and syphons as much data as possible from them.

It’s a plantation. All of us are trapped inside of these digital plantations that are doing nothing but vying for our attention and data. And if you say something that upsets them or their masters, the entire digital history of (you) can disappear without a trace. It’s almost 2020 yet we are still living like digital serfs.

Understand that this project is meant to be for devs only at this stage, but their marketing attracted a bunch of users instead. Read the old hackernoon articles and ycombinator posts. Listen to the ether review podcast ep 46 with Yarvin. Read through the urbit.org blog archives. Listen to the On the Brink podcast which just did an interview with a dev inside the urbit bunker. Consider the risks involved with spending too much time speaking made up jargon and looking at sigils online all day. Oh, and of course you should peruse the warosu archives. There aren’t really a ton of posts on Yarvin or urbit but there are a few decent threads and atleast one gem in there too.

This is really only meant to be used by developers in its current stage, but their design/marketing was so good it attracted a bunch of users instead. If we do not have self-sovereign computing within the next decade we will inevitably transition to a full-scale cybernetic panopticon. We need autistic anons to quit cooming and start fucking HOONING.
