One of the owners' wife is a lawyer and helped them set up the initial paperwork, as well as get some sort of 'patent pending' in place (I don't know the precise nature of it, but something that establishes ownership of the intellectual property). Also, just because I'll be making more than them at my day-job in the future doesn't mean I currently have more money than them. I'm still a student and will get the $5k/mo as an intern salary this summer while they've been graduated and working for a number of years. Plus, as mentioned, one of the guys is married to a lawyer. So that, along with still wanting to develop the product, makes me not very keen on walking away. Perhaps I could threaten to simply stop (I think I could make it clear to them how valuable I am for the product) but I wouldn't be able to take the intellectual property and run with it without a lawsuit (or threat of one) that I wouldn't want to deal with.

>why don't you just invest more in the partnership than your partners have? instead of asking for equity, provide it
That's an interesting thought - something I could definitely bring up with them as an option to smooth over the percentage number I'm asking for.
