The thing is, if they do this then everyone would just call bankruptcy on their loans. The costs of the loan outweighs the distress you would take up from discharging it - especially if you're freshly graduated with no assets of your own to give a fuck about. Oh no, the bank is going to take your xbox!!! You'll get back on your feet and be better off in most cases just immediately discharging the debt and building your life from the on.

I mean, not that I personally fucking care because I'm for the destruction of student loans anyway; but to believe this is an answer is a little disingenuous. While I hate that they made student loans unforgivable, I understand why they did it in the first place.

A better middle ground solution is to have earning brackets, and the interest rates on your loans are adjusted according to what you make. If your degree gets you no job worth a rat's ass, then you're free to just let that loan sit on 0% interest for the rest of your life until inflation makes it worth a fraction of the original cost by the time you hit retirement age and decide to foot the bill. The education clearly didn't help in this case, so it essentially acts as a refund from institutions failing to properly provide you with something worth tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Of course this would mean someone could hypothetically plan their life around low income high saving early adulthood before pivoting into a high income late life, but such planning would be commendable and worthy of screwing the system imo if someone had the patience and planning required for that long game. Most people won't do that, and would prefer making more money NOW if they had the chance.
