okay so I did a bit of research; I was right in that the glass is enough for the alpha (and beta) radiation but apparently radium emits gamma as well
apparently ~72x background radiation

and doing a little math gives me
Assuming max 0.1 grams radium in total; consider there are 2.65 x 10^20 atoms in 0.1 grams, and with a half life of 1600 years, about 360 million atoms decay each second.
2.65*10^20 * (1-e^-(.693/(5*10^10)) ~= 363 million

produces a fuck ton of radon; one source says
