JEPI has underperformed on a total return basis (meaning dividends are reinvested) for the past 6 months. But in the end that's irrelevant anyway, what matters to an investor today is predicting forward returns.
JEPI will underperform massively going forward as VIX is too cheap right now to efficiently sell puts. On top of that, their quality/income stock picking portion of the ETF has become overvalued in the flight to safety this past year. None of these covered call ETFs are viable long term holds, as they suffer irrecoverable losses during periods of significant market turmoil. They eat the full downside and then sell away the upside bounce.

It's really that simple.
