Did the exact thing as OP said but with land in Siberia. Building your own shit with zero regulatory micromanagement is extremely satisfying. Becoming self-sufficient, or at least living inna self-sufficient bartering community is easier than you think.

I built with my dad growing up in the states, but in Russia like I said, EVERYONE builds. Construction / material stores are everywhere. I deferred to my in-laws for specifics like hiring out excavation and septic tank install. Also electric hookup. We laid foundation with some help, then just started building. Online you can find schematics that tell you exactly what to buy and building progression. Hardware stores have them printed out so I just got a basic one and had the materials delivered at stages. Again I had to rely on in-laws for Siberian log cabin style building, so I learned about "chinking" and other insulation nuances for -40C winters.

After the basic structure, I just kept adding whatever I wanted. This yurt-style thing is an outdoor kitchen. One of my neighbors builds them and I just asked him to help me in return for getting him car parts for his toyota.

Siberia-anon here. -40c in winter. Most houses are log-cabin style but some are like the ones in OP pic, but with double wall construction and insulation between. For log-style you can cut them flush like mine in pic on the right, or another insulation method in english is called "chinking", kek.

About electric, its true you can't depend on public utilities. Not just because they are Russian, but harsh weather does knock them out. So in my case I have electric + wood fireplace / stove (this >>24255522) + a generator, water lines + rain catch, septic tank + outhouse.

In my case I've been going on the 3 year multi-entry tourist visa for 6-month stays, for the past 10 years. I also married a Siberian girl, so that made everything easier... I usually live there over the summer than take a 6 month work contract back in the US over the winter (winters are -40C!). Eventually I have to get residency via the marriage but can't start that until I commit to living there for at least 5 years.

The house is title to my wife, and my father in-law basically took care of it all. He's pretty based. We built this yurt thing together in the yard which is a 2nd kitchen for altay barbeque deeproast. Doggo is happy as well.

Yes. And I married a rural Siberian girl and the land is registered under her name. Land ownership by foreign nationals is possible in RF, but I don't want too much attention from FSB or in my meme-clearance background checks.

No, the neighborhood is actually based. Rural people look out for each other. My in laws live there now just to keep the water running, otherwise the pipes will stay frozen through May. Currently I'm stuck in the US because RF locked the borders.

Pic, my kitchen and doggo.
