Wow, that's a bit... extreme. Did he kill another driver while drunk to get such sentencing?

It reminds me of a guy i knew during my univ years. Used to drink like a sink, and party any occasion he got.
Eventually he drove back home completely shitfaced, like every thuesday, friday and saturday nights and fell asleep while behind the wheels. Landed on the other lane and faced another car. All the occupiants (mom, dad and kid) on the other car died. He miraculously survived, but lost his 2 legs and his pp, his spine was destroyed and he also was paralized up to the tits.
The truly grim thing is by the time the ambulance showed up and started the blood transfusion, he lost so much blood and they pumped so much fresh blood in him, he was right below the authorized alcohol limit when the cops arrived at the hospital to take a sample (to determine responsibilities). So he went off scott free while killing 3.

But of course losing half his body + the constant back pain plunged him into a severe depression, he told me once his biggest regret wasn't having killed a family, but the fact he'd forever remain virgin because he had a tube in place of his dick now. So he continued to drink as much, with now daily morphine doses who would put down an elephant. And he still drunk-driven on a daily basis, in his handicar, financed by the taxpayers. Couldn't recount how many times i've seen him already shitfaced at 8am showing up to class. He was a kinda piece of shit, but i could only feel pity for him. Didn't stay in contact after univ, but i'd bet he died within 2-3 years, either from overdosing on morphine, choking in his vomit, suicide, or killed on the road.
