Diamonds, while very hard, are also actually quite brittle. Dropping a diamond on the floor will probably not break it. Almost nothing in the world can scratch it. However, hitting a diamond with a hammer will crack the diamond and break it. Why are diamonds brittle? Their hardness is also what causes their lack of durability. Diamonds are so tightly packed together that they do not have the ability to absorb very much kinetic energy. This means that diamonds can easily be fractured with enough force localized in a single point.
