The writer clearly explains that she challenged/questioned the scammers' legitimacy plenty of times throughout, but the scammers had reasonable enough answers at every step of the way. This kind of fraud happens through a slow breakdown of reality and mounting panic that you and your family might be in danger. These people are consummate professionals. Things that seem obvious in hindsight do not always seem so when you believe you have ticking seconds to remedy a terrible situation.
