I weighed the same ingot again and found it had seemingly absorbed water and increased in weight to 10 grams meaning that the ingot is porous and therefore impossible to measure density accurately. I also did a simple volumetric dimensional test with a brass caliper. This resulted in a density somewhere around 9 grams/cm^3.

I have resolved to send a sample of my rhenium (or whatever it is) to a guy I’ve worked with before on mineral assays to have it run through a X-ray diffraction machine. I will also attempt to melt a sample with a cutting torch my dad has at our ranch in west Texas when I go there this weekend.

Any ideas on how to measure the temperature of the cutting torch flame?
