They did what nobody else in the space was willing to do; they went to regulators, they went to banks.
They tried to work from within and normalize the big spooky crypto to everyday investors.
Their work in finance and government has spurned innovation in a decrepit system, and they damn near did it for free hoping that ODL would see adoption.
And to an extent it worked, but only for the space as a whole.
But the Jews got out Jewed.
They let Ripple do the heavy lifting without ever expecting to adopt.

I understand many people fud Ripple and XRP because muh stable coin, but they laid they groundwork that other chains are only riding on the coat tails of and get little to no credit.
ZEC has the same issue, where much of their research doesn't directly affect their chain. They just want to make the ecosystem better.
Even with ILP, ODL, Flare, and microtransactions it won't change much.
XRP should easily be number one in mcap but Ripple just doesn't know how to advertise themselves.
They understood that banks needed to be onboard first for true financial evolution, but I think even they underestimated just how Jewish the system would be.
