The coin weighs more than 1 ozt, because of the added copper.

Good idea! I tried to measure another small object (small screwdriver) and it consistently comes out around 3.51 mm, so maybe your method will work.
I'll try some other (newer) coins too. I was testing some old 1980's gold krugerrands, that maybe have some wear and aren't perfectly even.

Testing before purchase sounds fair, so long as you don't make the seller pay for it. But you don't need any fancy equipment, just some calipers and a precision scale that goes to 2 decimal places should be enough. You should be able to buy both for under $50.
You'll need to note down the exact dimensions and weight of the coin in question. And don't forget to test your test equipment beforehand, to make sure it's reliable, so you can return/exchange it if necessary.
Also a basic ping test might be a good idea, but I wouldn't make that the only test. It's just to see if there's a tungsten core (those don't ping gud).

Coins are better, because they're easier to verify.
Also you have to think about the taxes when you sell your metals (capital gains taxes). Sometimes it makes a difference what type of coins you buy (in the UK for example, you're better off to stick with sovereigns and britannias).

Only if you can get it for cheap, when and if the spot price drops (like it did a few months ago). Silver premiums are already high as it is, so a 23% flat tax is pretty nasty.

You should buy coins, because they're easier to verify. I buy krugerrands, because they're 22 karat and well-established coins that are very liquid worldwide, and have very low premiums. If you want .999 gold, you should look into the britannias and maples, as they have some additional security features.

You can check it pretty easily if you have some calipers and a precision scale.

Gold coins are easier to verify than bars. You have more metrics to test them with, and don't need expensive equipment.

I looks like his plastic flip is scratched (you can seem similar scratches below the coin).
Yours has a strange texture, but if it pings exactly that's a good sign. You might still try to verify the dimensions with calipers, and weight with a precision scale.

That's still fraud, but it's not at the same level as counterfeiting, which like he said will get the feds on your ass pronto.
Coins are also easier to test, so there's that too.

>Just look for silver coins on AliExpress, they’re apparently really convincing nowadays.
No, none of those fucking coins will even pass a visual test if you have a legit coin to compare with side-by-side. And even without that, they won't pass the most basic ping and magnet test.
Silver is a piece of cake to check. Gold's a bit harder, but when you're talking about minted coins it's still pretty easy to weigh them, measure, and do a visual comparison.

Tubes of 25, so I can pack more coins in less space (I have 7 so far, and my goal is 50). But they don't even have to be sealed because they don't tarnish like silver, and they don't scratch easily like .999 gold coins.

>>51602794
Yeah they're 22 carat (.916) and yet also contain 1 oz gold, so that means the coin weighs more than 31.1 grams.
As far as physical dimensions, I don't know (not familiar with all coin sizes).

>>51602981
Sure, but the maple is also a good choice.
