I've thought about similar things before as well, and the conclusion I've reached is that there are two important aspects of modern politics, one of them being the requirement to actively educate oneself within it in order to be able to have a reasonable opinion that benefits everyone, and the other, being the fact that the progression from politics in the past to now, that things have become more convoluted and it's not always that every choices made by a government affects the lives of average people to an extent in which it once did. Democracy seems to have had a positive and logical impact on societies until a specific point, where issues became more and more minor and had less impact on the lives of people as it might have in the past. Democracy requires the involvement of people directly in many issues that pertain to society as a whole, and in order to do this in recent times, there is a requirement to educate oneself as the issues are more nuanced and complex. Democracy once upon a time had no requirement for people to be well-versed in anything, as it was not a complex concept in which it is today.
