I got into a really bad breakup where I thought I would be depressed forever at the moment, but years or months later I forget more and more, and hey, that person forgot too. Politicians have a correct mindset: no matter how bad the scandal is, just stay quiet, be calm, and years later people simply forget about it (or at least the initial outrage is gone). Time fixes everything.

Never make promises that you're not sure you can fulfill, and always add "disclaimers" if you do ("I'm not sure I can solve your problems but I will try my best"). In that way it's much less stressful for both parties.

My autism makes me want to tell the dependents that they are ultimately responsible for their own well being or happiness, but of course that's social suicide.
