You shouldn't need someone to explain the difference between gross profit and net profit to you on a business board, but you should take care to separate the two when people are talking about what debt a company might owe to society-or even its employees-because the people inferring these things won't be doing it for you assuming they even understand themselves. I know this is bait but I'll answer the question anyway

Gross profit, as opposed to net profit, is the total profit a company makes before taxes, operating costs, interests on loans and so on are applied.

If I sell a loaf of bread for $1.00, say the bread cost me $.30 to purchase wholesale from the bakery, and $.10 to have shipped into my store (distributed evenly between however many loaves-ignoring any additional costs like labor, rent or property taxes etc. for simplicity's sake) my gross profit would still be that $1 earned from that individual sale. My net profit on the other hand would be $.60; the $.30, $.10 and the $.7 sales tax that'd normally be collected for a non-necessity item ends up as gross profit for the baker, the distributor and the government respectively. Walmart for example has a gross profit of 500 billion or so but a net profit of somewhere between 2 and 3 percent of that.
