oh boy, one of you guys.

yes, the ninja-to DID exist, just not in the way it is portrayed. there have been ancient blades found that were forged straight and angular, they were known as chokuto or shinobi gatana (yes with a g). additionally, ninja weapons were all made by hand. there was no ninja store you could walk into and buy any of the weapons. they were made from whatever basic materials were available.

hence why ninjato are shorter, (small amounts of scarce material available) the guards were square (no need to make it ornate because it was utilitarian) and the hamon or temper was rarely done because it was additional time and materials.

additionally, a lot of ninja used regular katana so as to not be identified, or broken katana found on the battlefield. the njinja sword did in fact exist.
