I suck at /biz/, just a tourist, but I love my cars so I'll help you out

Buy a mechanic friend for a couple hundred dollars

Go on yelp and look up mechanical inspection or something to that effect once you narrow down a car you want to buy and find a good example and communicate with the owner.
Don't buy eurocrap, it's expensive.
Buy a known reliable Japanese car. Lexus/Toyota is very reliable. So is Honda/Acura. Parts are plentiful and relatively cheap. Figure out the kind of car you want. You most likely don't need a heug SUV or pick up truck to say otherwise is usually a cope. Buy a small commuter car so figure out if you want a coupe or sedan. Since you don't have any friends, a smaller coupe probably makes more sense. Just look around, do your research, find out what kind of gas you'll use. 87 or do you need 91? An economy car probably will run 87, but consider your comfort too. A still relatively cheap luxury car (Lexus, or Acura) will have a few more creature comforts and will have a smoother, quieter, softer ride. So its a trade off. MPGs? Looks? Just really narrow down what you want. Once you know or have an idea, go on facebook and find groups for the particular car you want. Do some research, figure out common issues to look out for by literally searching 'common issues' in the group and how expensive they are to fix, if they're reliable or not, high mileage examples. Just do your homework and learn. Once you're ready with a car or a few in mind, go on market place, look for low mileage examples. One owner cars if possible. A few owners isn't too bad for an older car, but 1 owner, low mileage, boomer owned are holy grails. Take a walk and maybe find some for sale in your own block, or keep an eye out when you drive. Might find something. Autotrader is a good website for cars too. Once you find some good cars, message the owner, call them. Whatever. Get some info. Why they're selling. Ask if its okay to get someone to look at the car.
