I have a few thousand dollars I'm not going to use any time soon and I may as well invest. I'm very attracted to the idea of crypto but I can't understand what the fuck it is, it violates my whole understanding of currency and seems to rely on magic. Can someone explain crypto from top to bottom for me?

What is the best way to buy it and not get screwed on fees?
How does it compare to regular investing in a mutual fund or something in general?
