If you rent you are throwing this month's money. If you own, and then the place you live in becomes shit and your property value plummets, you've thrown away 20 years' worth of your money, and you'll be stuck in a shitty place with a mortgage.

During all that time you are tied to a physical location so you either couldn't go get better job opportunities somewhere else (without paying both mortgage and rent!) or without doing insanely long commutes to work (+1h) every day.

If you're old and wealthy, and don't have to work for others (self employed, businessman, etc), buy, but if you're young, ambitious and starting a career that you don't know where it'll take you it is best to rent to have no strings attached.

Also the damn Western world is collapsing. Why would you have illiquid, unmovable assets that can be confiscated, vandalized, etc? Things look fine now but wait for when the state becomes really bankrupt and stops giving handouts. Do you think its pets that are now hungry won't go in lynch mobs to the suburbs to try and pillage your nice home?

Buying is a long option on the Western world. Renting is buying temporarily with a Stop-loss.
