the worst part of computer graphics has to be how much back and forth between multiple software there is to it's production. this guy uses at least 4 different programs to make a hand-painted dragon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnfkkvCvijc

I've seen people even going as far as using simultaneously Blender and Maya for the same project. this is a tad redundant to say the least, I really wish 3d modeling/sculpting didn't require learning and paying for so many different environments, specially if you have to switch forth and back between them

>> No.771058

You don't have to work like this. Most software these days *is* capable of "doing it all".

But one piece of software or another is always going to be better to do a certain thing in, and it's up to you to decide if it's better by a large enough degree for you to bother switching back and forth between.

Yeah, I also wonder why painters use different brushes, I mean, isn't it faster to just use one?

that's one terrible analogy, pal

Not really no. They are quite different programs at the end of the day. My advice to you would be to stop thinking of "computer graphics" (not even sure what that means honestly) as one discipline or skillset (or whatever). 3D as a whole has many skillsets with many tools to help us accomplish them. There is -always- going to be specialization.

I sometimes use Maya and Blender despite Blender being my go to. I just love quaddraw, sure you can do it all in one software, but if it isn't too difficult to set up and you can take care of a step (in my case retopo) quicker yeah I am going to bring it into another program.

Polyquilt is pretty close to quaddraw in blender if you want to save some importing/exporting but I feel you.

I've been looking into maya now that indie licensing is a thing because it's so much better for creating/exporting animation for game engines (and the rigging is obviously better in the first place).

This is akin to having multiple brushes in photoshop. Having zBrush, Blender/Maya, Substance, photoshop, and AE/Nuke/TB etc for presentation is more like having a 5 room workshop where you have to move your project from room to room repeatedly.
it would be nice to have zBrush tier sculpting in Maya/Blender but that will likely never happen. It'd be nice to have substance tier texture creation inside photoshop but that will likely also never happen.

The amount of different processes and techniques used in any high end craft is just part of being great at something and utilizing every tool to your advantage.
Just use one program if you're so bothered, be less than you can be.

once blender gets official retopo tools similar to 3dcoat and maya, then fuck the rest, it's all gonna be blender.

This. Blender is so good, it will replace Photoshop and the entire Adobe suite. Hell, we might even run Blender as an operating system one day.

For the companies who make the software, it is easier, cheaper, and better to focus on one aspect and be exceptionally good at it than to tackle every possible thing you can do with the medium. This happens in the 2D realm as well; for me I like to switch between Medibang for painting and Photoshop for graphic design, but occasionally use GIMP or MS Paint for miscellaneous things like pixel art. I’m sure in the future when technology becomes easier and easier to handle, there will be an all-in-one program. For now, if you attempt to make such software, it will end up like how Blender is now (trying to be everything but not the best at any).

the main reason 4chan is successful is that threads are bumped based on reply count and discussion which encourages argument and discussion which leads to people learning to think critically which leads to a wiser userbase. This is why 4chan boards tend to be more clued up and savvy than their reddit counterparts as reddit focuses on whats popular and groupthink which leads to stagnation as ideas aren't challenged and given a chance to evolve.

citation needed. you're making lots of assumptions here that not everyone would agree with and leave holes in your argument. and as the other anon said, what "makes sense" in theory isn't necessarily the truth

Nothing forces you to jump around in that many software, depending on what you're doing it may be beneficial to you
but in general any content creation suite like max, maya, blender etc and a 2D editor like photoshop is what you actually need.

If you're doing high end sculpt obv you want a sculpt software like zbrush to use in conjunction with those but that's about it.

If you try to use them all and bring the best aspects of each because you have an idea of some kinda 'muh ultimate workflow'
chances are you gonna end up not knowing any of them that well and end up not making very ultimate stuff.

Be wary of emulating people who are obsessive about always having the absolutely best tools
because that line of thinking is seldom backed by a high proficiency at wielding said tools.

Except on some boards, the ones that get bumped the most are copypasta shitposts, and a lot of the less common debate gets archived quickly.
