So, I want to create weird shit like the webm here. Just random, surreal animations in 3d. But I suck at modeling and texturing. I taught myself basic box modeling before but I can't actually make anything complex.

What's the fastest path to actually produce something like the attached video? Should I just start from zero and try to learn modeling again?

I lose motivation super fast when practicing box modeling. Maybe I lack focus, or maybe the practice I'm doing is too far removed from my goal? I'm not sure.

I thought maybe I should just download free models from somewhere or kitbash collections and just try to rig something together that way (so, use pre-existing models but texture, light and animate myself).

Anyway, open to any advice on fixing my attitude / mindsets or just ideas for software or workflows that can help me reach my goal.

well the way I'd create something like this is...

Start off with a base character. Either imported from the internet or use a human primitive and import that into Maya (or blender). Then I'd rig it up.

To create the sort of pulling human part id create the base of it which is not animated. So just a pile of bodies connected together. Rig up that and do some paint weights.

For the floor Im guessing the guy used some kind of modifier that mimics cloth or water. Like a cloth modifier with special settings and the Feet on the character acts as a sort of weight to that.

Next to animate it all:

Animate the woman pulling the body pile. Thats a pretty easy process.

Now for the body pile:
Im guessing that the gravity is turned near to 0 for the thing. And the Womans hand is a sort of weight pulling it down. Its connected to her hand so when you animate her the body pile moves with her. The legs and arms moving is all calculated by the the engine and not individually animated.

Awesome breakdown, thanks so much for that. Makes it seem much more attainable!

Also if you research the guy behind the animations: Oliver Latta. He says he used Houdini to calculate the physics. Which makes sense because most if not all his animations rely on advanced calculations that should look real.

Now you mentioned how you are relatively new 3d? Well Houdini is like the industry standard for effects/physics ect. And its very advanced, also includes custom scripting to get the results you want. So its not something that a novice in 3d can learn any time soon. I'm not saying you cant do it, im just saying it would be very hard and time consuming. Houdini isnt the easiest program to learn. Even I am arent even going to touch it.

absolutely buy models. Houdini has examples in the help files for doing ragdolls and it ships with some decent models ready to work on. You'll still need a basic understanding of good topology, just don't waste your life on modelling. Getting things moving is much more valuable.

Yeah OP, this is more of a vfx/animation thing than modelling. You can grab a pre-rigged model from Mixamo, even one with the walk cycle already done and just go from there. This is a physics simulation animation so Houdini is king, but you can achieve this with other software packages.

I'm going to be brutally honest with you. 4chan is a place for fucking losers. The literally lowest of the low post and live here. If you're putting your faith into a post here, you're already failing. Go elsewhere. Get the fuck away from this place and be a productive member of society. Study 3D and excel the fuck out of it. Become something more than this shithole of a community. Never look back on this place

OP here. Quick update: I've started teaching myself Blender since it's free and there's so many tutorials for it. The 2.8 interface is super nice! Cool to see how far it's come.

Attached video is a render I did today. Just trying to get a handle on creating abstract designs that don't rely so much on modeling skill.

I'll keep using this thread to share my progress. It's a good way to keep me accountable.

Next, I'm probably going to rig some free character mesh and try to do a basic walk cycle.

>>705930
Thanks for the video! I'll probably look into Houdini after I'm more comfortable with Blender.

I love this place. Most of my hobbies developed because I started checking out some board I didn't often visit. That's how I got into 3DCG originally. Same with photography and fitness. I've been reading 4chan since 2006 or so. As I've grown up, I definitely spend less time here, but it's hard to imagine a time when I'll stop coming here altogether. Balance is key.

This guy is what made me want to get into 3D modeling too, OP. I'm extremely good at learning things on my own though. I've been doing it for just under a year now, and I just finished pic related yesterday. It's a slow process.
Don't learn how to model certain THINGS, but rather learn certain techniques. That, and learn it to a point where it's fun, and the rest of it will follow by itself. Same as anything else, in my opinion.
My model here isn't anything revolutionary, but considering I've taught myself, and in such a short amount of time; I'm pretty pleased. You never stop learning, either.

The models in your video are likely stock models and there's little to no texture work there. What's your issue?
