I’m making a robot hand. The hand is pretty bare bones, no armor, no cover, etc.

In my quest for refrence images I’ve not been able to find one that shows off the workings of the thumb, it usually being covered by something.

What would be the best way to model a robot thumb, that still shows off the inner workings.

Biomedical engineering student here, robo hands usually struggle with thumbs and use various approximations of their motion. Pic related is a fairly common approach, with the whole thumb on a big chunk that rotates roughly in line with the index finger. Most of the time that extra joint is part of the palm, rather than attached on top the way it is here.
