You can make anything with anything. There are people out there literally using Microsoft Paint to create masterpieces beyond your imagination. You could use Blender to model, sculpt, rig, animate, texture, light, simulate, render, edit and color grade the next Marvel movie, that doesn't mean you SHOULD when there are other tools out there that do the same things better.

The situation at hand is just particularly funny because people hype up Blender as this incredible underdog tool that BTFOs all of the commercial DCCs, then use shitty amateurish demo reels made by college students to prove their point.

I don't think this applies to blender. The sculpting toolkit has pretty much all you need to make realistic sculptures (just look at the professional zbrush sculptures, most of them use CB and little more than that). It's retarded to treat it as a "photoshop vs paint".

There is nothing "half-assed" about current Blender. It's actually very much a better and faster option for traditional modelling compared to Maya. Zbrush may be preferable to some for sculpting, but I will argue that Blender's current sculpting branch is on par with Zbrush already. Not to mention that Blender's implementation of dynotopo is the only reason Pixologic bothered with adding that feature, despite buying and destroying Sculptris in 2006.
Let's consider your original argument once more though:
>Blender literally can't produce good things XD
I think the obvious fact that lies hidden in this statement is that (you) can't make anything good, despite using software that you believed to be superior.

We're really talking about sculpting here, and nobody ever argued you should sculpt in maya. The point is that if you're promoting the tool for a specific use, you should have the results to back it up, and I've seen very little professional grade work being put out by blender (maybe this could be because of cycles and texture work, but I don't know).

Truth is, blender still is far behind zbrush, with the worst problem being performance, and I don't know if that's ever going to change.

In my computer, zbrush handles 10mil polys without even stuttering, while blenders sculpting tools start lagging at around 1.5 - 2mil; that's a BIG difference, and one that's not negligible, and may very well answer why you don't see anything both big and detailed coming out of blender. And while we're on the subject, one of the advantages of maya over blender is the same: performace, which is a very important thing in 3d.

Blender starts lagging at 2mil tris when dyntopo. At about 3-4mil switching modes becomes really slow (about 5 seconds). I didn't even test it with textured brushes, I only used the default ones without texture. ZBrush starts lagging at about 11mil for me, but only with textured brushes. The other big difference between the two programs is the memory usage, with zbrush being around 30% better in that regard (7mil on blender takes around 2.5 gbs, while zbrush only reaches 2.5 at around 11-14mil). My computer isn't very new, as you can imagine, and I'd say yours could probably handle 30mil on zbrush comfortably.

All I can say is that our tech lead is for some reason interested in Blender for some reason lately, but he seems to spend a lot of time laughing at it and scratching his head.

Take from that what you will - but don't take from it that I have any fucking opinion on it whatsoever because I don't.

And maybe consider growing the fuck up.

>our tech lead is for some reason interested in Blender for some reason lately
It probably has to do with the recent release of 2.80, I'm guessing. It's touted as a deep revamp of the interface, and made Blender look a bit more modern. Functionally it's still not much better, leaving Eevee aside, the new viewport engine.

But he's a tech lead, what does he normally use? Blender doesn't offer much (if at all) that can compare with usual TD software, like Houdini. Have you asked him why he's trying out Blender? Maybe he's not okay, going through some sort of job crisis or who knows what. I'd be concerned.

Everything. R&D to identify and develop new pipelines is a big part of his role. He can use literally everything on a very conversational level - it's kinda scary. He's in his 50s btw. He's got previous, let's say that.

He kinda does his own thing a lot of the time and then turns up at our bi-monthly lead meetings with a whole new crazy theoretical workflow for this or that.

I remember him mentioning a big revamp now you bring it up.

He's kind of an obsessive. Most people just leave him alone, but he's a nice guy.

When your entire department gets sacked, this guy you see once every other month somehow gets to stay in his little bubble completely untouched.
They have a guy (or girl) on retainer whose whole job is just to drive this guy from place to place, and make sure he's dressed.
I had a friend my first year of college that said his dad was like that; Dow chemicals paid him to spend most of his time at home in his bathrobe, then suddenly once or twice a year he'd give them a call, put on his clothes, go in for an hour, then come back home.

If you scan these peoples brains, often they have a super abundance of corpus callosum connections to the math / reasoning / logic / whatever parts of their brain, at the cost of a shortage of connections to the motor / spacial awareness / time sense / etc portions of the brain.

Be me. Think the Blender Rigid Body Simulation is a brokem mess for years. Never use it. Try it again after 5 years or so. Still completely broken shit in 2.8. See this option in the Scene Settings saying "Simulation Steps per Second". Increase the number from default to 500 just out of curiosity.

Everythings works perfectly. Rigid bodies fall like real objects and don't fall through everything like before.

i was looking into doing hard NPR shadows like the old BI was good at, and it's kind of distressing that the maximum limit on shadow buffer size(if that's what it's still called... i mean the cube size setting) for eevee is 4096.
even with that i was getting the jagged as fuck shadow on the left.

for anyone interested in working on NPR and wanting crisp shadows, i found that, after switching eevee's shadow mode to VSM instead of ESM, the bleed bias option under spotlights smoothed out the shadow for the result on the right. however, it may not be obvious at this reso, but zooming in further on the right the shadow is still quite squiggly.

and i've heard cycles and eevee are mostly supposed to be intercompatible/have interchangeable materials, but the cycles result is quite different from this.

Another professional chiming in. Our studio thought about doing some work with blender but it was mainly for converting file types so we didn't have to buy certain software licenses. That's about it.

We did talk about how apparently 2.8 has like navigation settings now to make it feel more like Maya. Which is honestly the main reason I haven't touched it past opening it up. I think it does well for free software, but it still isn't quite at the level it needs to be to be competitive.

Consumers do not care what software you have used to make your media. If it doesnt look as good as the other stuff out there, it doesn't matter if you save thousands on license fees.

On that note - what would a character with modest detail like this take an average skilled pleb here?

Why would anyone use blender when you can't do something simple like a fucking bevel

So hard to say dude.
Is it your first character?
Do you have experience in other aspects?
Like do you
>Already have an understanding of sculpting
>Already know how to retopologize other objects
>Understand how UVs work and what makes for good or bad UV seams
>Know how to texture
>Know how to rig a character
>Know how weight painting works
>Know how to animate a character and use the timeline

Taking a character from concept to finish (game ready) or whatever you want to call it, is so dependant on what you already know.
Also on how detailed you want the character to be. Is it a realistic human model with detailed clothing or a cartoony style model with more simple clothing.
So, answer me which of the above you are already comfortable with.

I have literally just begun doing a Blender tutorial. So I'm waaay off being ready. But I am curious if I kept at it how long would it take to learn? I'd be happy with a fairly simple character that I could use in a game. Nothing fancy - like even the Crash Bandicoot 1 model impresses me if I'm honest lol

I've historically been into programming and just figured the art side would never be for me but I've been doing new things like this recently.

Some artists take more naturally to sculpting than modeling.

Also it also adds a third step. Model > Upres/Sculpt>Retopo as a compared to Sculpt > Retopo.
That said, I prefer modeling myself.

>Model > Upres/Sculpt>Retopo
Uhh but the original model would skip the final retopo process.

Are you me? Your post sounds exactly like shit I've posted here like 3 weeks ago. Fast forward and now I'm working on 2 projects non-stop since breaking that procrastination wall and going beast mode. You have an idea, that's an amazing start, you can literally start googling shit like "sculpting in blender 2.8", find someone who starts from scratch and take notes. Don't follow along tho, you can later, but you should pick like 2-3 brushes and start working with that.
I'm saying all this because
>I'm waaay off being ready
is bullshit. It doesn't matter if it'll take 2 weeks, all you have to do is start working on it. You'll love it, I promise.

It's shit by anyone's standards. What the fuck? It took you FOUR (4) years to learn to do this and five whole months to do it?

LGBT art is a gold mine. They'll dish out money for literally anything that's even remotely homosexual in a positive way.

That's the reason why you use the industry standard instead. Doesn't annoy you and works absolutely silently!

Arnold produces nice images, but man, is this fucking renderer lame. Its better than Renderman and Mantra, but twice as slow as Vray and 10x slower than Redshift or Octane.

>> No.706555

>>706518
So Arnold, Renderman, Mantra, Vray, Corona, Redshift, Octane never produce noise?
Fuck off retard!

>> No.706556

>>706554
Arnold is best used in environments with farms/CPU clusters because it scales really well. Not so great for a single workstation.

>> No.706563

>>706556
Exactly, like Renderman, Clarisse, Mantra.
That's why recommending it to people using weak desktops makes not really sense.
Stick to whatever works faster while giving good enough results.
