Yes however far more memory intensive and limited. Remember you can only move in 90 degree angles with voxels while polygons let you do any angles as long as its a straight line.

Polygons look better since they can approximate curvatures far better then voxels.

I pointed out how voxels look and why they are not used because of their ridiculous limitations. a voxel can only move at 90 degrees and gives this look polygons allow for far better and cheaper approximation of curvature and everything else.

Of course voxels where used only not in minecraft* you zoomer idiot. Some games like delta force used them for terrain basically 2x2D pictures one for height information the other for textures. Only this did get out of favor.

In all seriousness minecraft does not use true voxels it actually uses polygon cubes and these polygon cubes are textured like every other 3D object in every polygon game. It uses some voxel like algorithm to determine the placement in a grid of these polygonal cubes.

True voxels are 1 voxel 1 color like pixels.
And voxels are not supposed to be this big see delta force 1 another indication that these are not true voxels.

With this out of the way I have a deep seeded hatred for the cancer that is minecraft. Minecraft is a game that after 7~30 days you stop playing because it has nothing going for it.

If you want to build a house or anything else learn a 3D modeling program like blender instead of doing the autism of needing to find resources in minecraft and assembling the cubes in the most awkward interface imaginable.

When I was a kid I modeled in demo/trail versions of 3D modeling programs for fun. People who do all these things in minecraft are retarded or actually retarded children.

They ended up "finishing" it, making a video arcade where you essentially play the wii in front of a projection screen at 12fps. It was a huge flop.
They still do scans of places for companies though last time I checked, so they're still in business in some capacity. But last time I checked was a few years ago so who knows.

There's an interesting parallel between 2d vector graphic and bitmaps in the early days, and polygon and voxels, as they are pretty much the same with an added dimension.

In the very early days all images were vector graphics because computer simply didn't have the memory for bitmaps. The formats were a mess, everyone did it differently, but it had the added benefit of being infinitely scalable/resizeable. As computer memory became greater and greater, the hassle of vector images were tuned out for simple list of pixels, bitmaps. Bitmaps can be easily shared. The formats are simple. The pictures will always look the same. They can be compressed.

Extremely common complexity/memory trade-off in computer science.

3d is still in its "vector graphics" stage, with all the competing standards it comes with. Unfortunately, it seems computer memory will never reach the point when voxels can become viable alternatives and as easily shared as a bitmap. The trade-off in that case is not worth it. Graphic cards nowadays have far more computing power than memory, and it seems it won't change in the close future.
