From the chatter I hear in the industry Blender 2.8 has Autodesk SHOOK. So, would it be resonable to say that you could use Blender now for your entire character creation/rendering pipleine?

Yes. Standardlets won't admit it but just look at the increase in PR and quality features that have been added in the past year and the speed of new additions with the wizard Pablo is really pushing it forward.
Pre 2.8, it was certainly fair for Autodesk to shrug off blender.
Note the comparison is always blender VS Maya, not blender vs 3dsmax. This is because it's already overtaken 3dsmax in pretty much every normal workflow way. There's a few things you still can only do in max though, but those are generally small things and it would be silly for Autodesk not to be worrying.

As for blender becoming the industry standard, it still has a ways to go and the support issue is a real thing. Even now on 2.8 when I got a problem if a Google search doesn't help me I'm kinda out of luck. Ill ask in the blender thread but I don't use tranny discords. So will giant production houses switch entirely to blender? Unlikely anytime soon. But more and more will start to try it.
The other reality is from guys I know, nearly all of us have tried or played around with blender 2.8 and enjoyed it. It's like 90% approval rating among us. That's quite huge.

I think what will really push it over the edge is better sculpting performance. Now it has polygroups, there's less and less missing from the main workflow of zbrush but the biggest thing by far standing out is the sculpting performance. For my laptop at home which isn't a beast for example, i can reasonably do 2mil sculpts in blender while zbrush I can pass 20m. That's a huge fuckin gap.

Blenders on the rise and Autodesk would be silly not to be concerned when it's getting so popular.

It still doesn't have a user interface that isn't a kludge on a patch on a bad idea.

Excellent! Hopefully Autodesk will get off their asses and keep pushing Maya further. They've already launched $20/mo indie pricing but there are still so many ways the software can be improved, let's hope they get on it.

Do you know how much money Autodesk makes with all of their different softwares? They make more money than the BF in one year with maya alone. They don't give a shit about donut maker.

i know this will sound like the classic "my dad works at nintendo", but i know a guy that works for autodesk and is telling me the subscription price will be going down, as an incentive to keep people around, because blender 2.8 was a massive leap forward, whereas autodesk has been pissing around for years. they 100% never expected blender to accomplish anything, and this is the only response they have.

Blender is good for modeling/sculpting/retopology/rigging/animation/rendering, but it's got a long way to go when it comes to UVs and painting.

I use 3ds Max, but any free alternative is a hit against software like this.

Why do you think they give the students licence, trials, indie? It's to hook you up, allow you to spend time and effort, to get used to the product then you buy it.

So if there is an alternative, well they might lose a bit. Im not saying 50% but even 0,1% with those millions you mentioned, that's a lot.

>> No.705838

>>705835
Well autodesk is definitely starting to take free alternatives more serious, i was a max user back when the software was developed by discreet, autodesk literally gave no fuck about us for the last 5 -10 years. Atleast they start to take us serious now.

Blender is pushing everyone in the industry to improve and my guess is that thanks to that we max users have a decent roadmap for our software.

>> No.705934

>>705838
First of all, they are rewriting the almost 30 years old code, you know what that means? 3ds Max is going to be a totally new program, that won't take 4-5 Gb just to install and 2 min to start.

But its AutoDesk so fuck them really, If Blender will be just a bit better... well then Im moving to it
