Yeah, busy life but doing some Blender shit is always fun as heck.
This was literally just fucking around with blender fluids. Absolutely most basic setup with a box as domain, sphere as inflow and some tinkering with settings I have no clue about until it kinda looked neat lol. Also interesting to see what makes things painfully slow and find settings that make me not throw the towel with my old i7. Baking of this one was about 3 minutes.

if your characters are at a scale of 1BU == 1 meter, you end up tweaking physics properties by 0.0001 here or there, which adversely affects a different parameter somewhere, etc.

Yeah it's kind of difficult to get right. Ideally I'd like a mix of the thick creamy goodness and runny clear stuff, but b(l)ender's built-in fluid sim doesn't support mixed viscosity in one sim or interaction between multiple sims. I'm not shelling out $70 for FLIP so I figure that two particle systems with fluid physics and Molecular Script for the interaction, using metaballs as the render object might work.

I made a generic innocent fluid material a while back for Cycles.

I chose to use a transparency/glossy shader combo instead of a glass shader because glass in Cycles is dark and noisy as hell. The downside to this is that the fluid has no ior, which gives it a fake, 2d look in some places.

Make sure you have the light paths set to full global illumination otherwise you will get grey volumes instead of white. Also you may need to tweak the color and density of the volume for your scene.

tried using two materials as a workaround for not being able to get a volumetric texture to flow with the fluid.
it's pretty much just rough glass on the outer faces, then a solidify modifier on the fluid with negative offset and clamped to geometry set to use a basic white shader for the new internal faces. it works okayish until the first spurt hits icosadude and then the solidify fucks up.

Damn, this is a beautiful video. Wonderful presentation, great colours, rendered even at 4k. The backing track just makes it even better. How they allow the track to just take over the entire video once the voiceover has ended and they're just showing off all the other examples. Genuinely impressive direction and production to pair with an equally impressive paper. It's really only missing a good mic.

Hm, I wonder what software was used to do that? Blender? Maya? Mudbox? 3D-Coat? ZBrush? The material seems like the one from Mudbox, but, in truth, any render engine can mimic it. Plus it doesn't seem like it was rendered from the modeling program, because of the weird background, unless it was added with image planes or some trickery. The cancerous blobby ArtStation-fad style is evident though, but that doesn't tell anything about which program was used to make it, again. Geez, I give up.
