Since you've mentioned an elbow, I've made an abstract one real quick and bent it with just bone envelopes. It's not perfect but it requires practically no work at all.

I'll post it soon but it's essentially one line. As I've explained above it just sets the cylindrical part of the bone envelope to take precedence over the caps. I'm sure there are way better solutions people smarter than me can come up with.
