Daz Studio was used to make the animatics for the Avengers movies and others. Studios used to just use Barbie dolls and cardboard cutout scenery for animatics so Daz is a step up. If you have the director's cut of ST2:WoK they include the animatics and for that they actually used old Star Trek action figures and other toys.

Daz Studio is used by small advertising agencies that don't have the budget for Maya, and it's used by some freelance graphic artists. There was a cover of Heavy Metal magazine that was done in Daz Studio.

Personally I use Daz Studio just to make reference images for 2D illustrations but I enjoy making content for Daz Studio too.

There's nothing inherently wrong with Daz Studio. You should see the stuff the Japanese users make with it. But it's strictly a rendering/animating application. You'll need another app if you want to create your own models.

The reason why so many Daz renders look like crap is because most Daz users have no training in lighting and so either render with a single distance light or with the default lighting with no shadow.

But there are professional illustrators who use the software and get very nice results with it.

It has a userbase of over 100K users so naturally since 95% of everything is shit there are going to be a lot of shit Daz renders.

If Maya had the same size of a user base it would have the same number is shit renders. It's not the fault of the software it's that most users don't know what they're doing.

This cover for Heavy Metal Magazine was created and rendered in Daz.
