One idea I'm considering is to use negative vertex weights.
The way I've set it up right now, the interior of the bends are as sharp as they can be but maybe sometimes it would be nice if they would bulge out slightly.
In some complex rigs (such as the one in pic related) you can see a bone going backwards after the elbow joint. I suspect the role of that auxiliary bone is to emulate a negative vertex weight somewhere.
I don't if and ever I'm going to work on this idea, but if you're able to code, you're welcome to try it out before I do.
